Belgium’s first ever Centre for Clinical Research in Nutrition, CICN, will be inaugurated on Tuesday at Faculty of Motricity Sciences of the Catholic University of Louvain (UCLouvain) in Louvain-la-Neuve.
The CICN, which is the first research centre in Belgium that covers all disciplines involved in the study of human nutrition, is an initiative of the Louvain4nutrition trans-disciplinary research consortium, with funding from the Louvain Foundation and the Wallonia Region. Its aim is to seek ways to improve people’s nutrition in the 21st Century.

The CICN, which will be of interest to UCLouvain academics as well as industrialists, will involve experts in intestinal micro-biotics and physical activity, psychologists, toxicologists, pharmacists, bio-statisticians, endocrinologists and bio-engineers. It will draw on the expertise within UCLouvain’s three sections (Health Sciences, Science and Technology, and Human Sciences) so as to centralise skills and propose a multidisciplinary approach in conducting scientifically validated studies on nutrition.

According to the UCL, no other centre offers such an interdisciplinary approach in Belgium.

The CNCN will have a special type of infrastructure, combining biological sampling rooms, taste-analysis rooms, a kitchen, a dining room and even a relaxation room equipped with cameras to analyse nutritional behaviour. The centre will also be using the existing infrastructure of the effort-test laboratory of the Faculty of Motricity Sciences.
