Sanctions against Russia not topmost priority - Reynders

The resumption of a political dialogue on the Syrian crisis, whether with Iran or Russia, is a priority, as opposed to sanctions against Moscow, Belgian Foreign Minister Didier Reynders said on Monday on arriving at a meeting with his European counterparts in Luxembourg.
“There will be no military solution in Syria and if we want a political solution, we have to have that dialogue with Iran and Russia,” he stressed.

Sanctions against the allies of the Syrian regime are thus not topmost priority in his eyes, the Belgian Foreign Minister explained, whereas the U.S. Ambassador to the UN, Nikki Haley, had announced new measures against Moscow for its support for Bashar al-Assad.

Saturday’s air strikes against the Damascus regime by the United States, along with France and the United Kingdom, were “a very strong signal to show the red line,” Reynders said, while calling for the establishment of a mechanism that would make such action no longer necessary.
