Roger Federer won Wimbledon for the eighth time on Sunday.
During the final the Swiss player, ranked fifth worldwide, beat Marin Cilic (Cro/APT 6) in three sets (6-3, 6-1, 6-4). The match lasted 1 hour and 41 minutes. Federer did not lose a single set during the tournament.

Cilic asked for a medical time-out during the second set, due to an injury to his left foot. The score was 6-3 3-0 at the time. He continued to receive treatment at the end of the second set, which ended 6-1. The Croatian went back into the match after getting a bandage put on his left foot. Federer eventually won the set 6-4.

Federer has won 7 of their matches to Cilic’s 1. This is the eighth time Federer has won Wimbledon (2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2009 and 2012). He now holds the record for the number of Wimbledon titles, beating American Pete Sampras. They share the record for Opens. Brit William Renshaw also won the London tournament seven times, between 1881 and 1889.

This is Federer’s 19th Grand Slam victory. In total, the 35 year old Swiss has won 93 tournaments since the beginning of his career. Federer has had a spectacular 2017 so far. He had already won the Australian Open, as well as the Indian Wells, Miami and Halle competitions.
