It could be the transport of the future. The city of Namur launched a new cable car in 2021 to replace the charming old téléferique that ran from 1957 until it closed down due to safety issues in 2002.
The main purpose is to get tourists up to the Citadel perched high above the town. But the city also wants the sleek little cabins to form part of its urban transport network.
For the moment the passengers are mostly tourists who prefer to avoid the stiff climb to the summit. The three-minute ride gets them to the fortress esplanade where they can head off to explore the impressive defences built over the centuries to protect Namur from attack.
