Assaults near Namur University: approximately 15 arrests made on Wednesday at midday

At least sixteen people were arrested in front of fast food restaurants on Namur’s Rue de la Gare as part of inquiries made into attacks near the university campus in the Walloon capital at midday on Wednesday, revealed the spokesperson for the Namur police zone, Laurence Mossiat. The public prosecutor and the police force in Namur will give an update on identity checks and arrests made later today.

Just under ten misdemeanours were committed by a gang in the centre of Namur, including verbal and physical violence as well as robbery, and led to complaints filed with the Namur police force since the beginning of the academic year, and signed by the commanding officer, Pascal Ligot, and the public prosecutor in Namur, Vincent Macq.

Four under-age perpetrators are being charged following their December arrests and will appear before a juvenile court. These arrests helped establish the links “between several acts perpetrated and suspects already identified.”

Authorities wish to “reassure the public in the current environment.” “We can promise the Namur population that we will continue to focus as much as is required on fighting this type of violence.”

Anyone who suffers or witnesses an assault or a suspicious act must call 101 or the Namur police phone number (081/246.611) directly “as soon as possible” and refrain from broadcasting relevant information “through other means such a social networks, etc.,” insist both prosecutor and police authorities.
