Flanders on track for new tourism record

Tourists made 14.2 million overnight stays in Flanders between January and June 2018, one million (+8) more than in the corresponding period of last year, the region’s Tourism Minister, Ben Weyts, said on Sunday in a press release. “The year 2018 is on track to beat 2017’s record figures,“ he added.

Foreign visitors spent 750,000 additional nights (+11%), while Belgian tourists clocked 250,000 (+4%) more nights.

Foreign tourists came mainly from neighbouring countries: the increase in German stays was 10%, while Flanders saw 12% more British and French visitors. About 24% more Chinese went to the Dutch-speaking region; so did more Brazilians (+20%) and North Americans, (+17%).

The figures also showed that more and more people go to Flanders on short trips with a limited number of overnight stays.
