Blue skies and sunny weather have attracted more tourists to the coast this holiday break than in 2021, according to West Flanders’ provincial tourism body, Westtoer, Belga News Agency reports.

About 600,000 tourists travelled to the coast during the break, 40% more than in 2021, Westtoer reported on Sunday. The total number of nights spent in the province remained unchanged at one million.

Hotels had high occupancy rates of up to 80% during the first weekend. The rest of the week also saw better rates than in 2021, with an increase of 26%. About 20% of customers were from neighbouring countries.

Since the coronavirus pandemic, online registrations have increased by 50%.

Where rental agencies are concerned, the number of reservations was the same as last year, while occupancy rates hovered around 60%.

Owners of secondary homes also flocked to the coast during the break, which ran from 28 February to 6 March.
