PostNL stops missed-delivery messages for Dutch customers, continued in Belgium for now

From 1 July, the Dutch postal service PostNL will stop leaving missed-delivery messages if its mail couriers find doors closed and are unable to deliver packages in The Netherlands.

Anyone who is not at home at the moment of delivery will receive an email message or direct notification through the app of the Dutch company instead, according to reports from Het Laatste Nieuws.

The company hopes the new procedure will reduce its annual paper consumption by 70,000 kg and, also, save time. In about 9% of cases, people who are expecting packages are not at home when they are delivered, according to the postal service company.

PostNL confirmed that it will continue to leave notes in Belgium for now, because its app is not yet functional in other countries. However, this is being developed so it can be expanded to Belgium.

Response to allegations

The company has recently been accused of various crimes, including social fraud, forgery and criminal organisation following an undercover investigation by a Flemish journalist last year.

On Saturday, it put out a statement saying it will only work with “bona fide partners and is saying farewell to delivery companies that do not keep to the rules and agreements,” and that it will improve checks made for correct registration with the social security system, as well as identity checks to ensure all drivers comply with social legislation.
