After a week with some torrential rain, this weekend will begin with cloudy – but generally dry – weather, Belgium's Royal Meteorological Institute forecasts.

The northwest is expected to be the first area to benefit from the clear, sunny conditions, which will then spread to the rest of the country.

However, afternoon showers are not to be ruled out in the high Ardennes, Belga News Agency reports.

Peak temperatures will range from 18°C in Hautes-Fagnes to 24°C in the centre of the country, with moderate winds.

On Saturday evening, the weather will be dry throughout the country and generally clear.

Sunday will be mild and generally dry. Occasional banks of clouds will pass and highs will still range between 17°C and 22°C. Winds will be low.

Next week will start with similar temperatures to the weekend before the a period of high pressure brings sun and higher temperatures in the midweek.
