On Tuesday morning, armed police officers and special units detained a 23 year-old man, for alleged kidnapping.
At around 04:30, local police were called to an apartment on Koning Albertstraat in Hasselt. A young man was seen escaping the flat and telling police that he was being held there against his will.
The assailant, who has since been identified as a 23 year-old male, was armed and retreated into his flat.
The special assistance unit SAU-TIG, which is often utilised for house searches and dangerous arrests, a police drone, and special units of the Federal Police were brought in as reinforcements.
The Koning Albertstraat at the level of Ridderstraat was closed as a result of the incident, with Limburg police also blocking the Kleine Ridderstraat, which runs parallel to the Koning Albertstraat.
Cyclists and pedestrians may continue to use the Groene Boulevard between the start of both streets, but automobiles are not permitted.
On the other side of the Koning Albertstraat at the Grote Markt the perimeter had also been marked off, as it was at the Havermarkt. Gallery 'De Ware Vrienden' was also completely closed off.
An ambulance had also arrived within the security perimeter, but emergency services have since moved to the scene of the arrest.
As a result, the City of Hasselt had asked people to avoid the area englobed by the security perimeter for the time being
