The two largest sections of the new bridge for cyclists and pedestrians over the Brussels Ring Road in Zaventem were installed without hitch on Saturday night, Belga News Agency reports.

The first two sections of the bridge, which should be operational within two months, were installed last weekend.

For the installation of sections three and four, the entire ring road was closed to traffic in both directions from 10.00 p.m. on Saturday to 08.00 a.m. on Sunday. Road users were instructed to take the R22 and did not need to make any additional deviations.

"The installation of the bridge is a complex operation,” said Marijn Struyf, spokesperson of Werkvenootschap, the agency that manages Flemish mobility projects. “The cranes used need to avoid damaging the road and the bridge’s decks weigh up to 80 tonnes each. Putting them in place is a real exploit, but our technicians succeeded.”

The remaining two sections will be installed next weekend, after which the bridge will be asphalted, and its lighting system installed.

The first cyclists should be able to use it by the end of March or the beginning of April. More information about cycling infrastructure projects in the area can be found here.
