The Wallonia-Brussels Federation launched a huge drive this weekend to collect non-perishable food so that 15,000 needy children and youths can enjoy holidays and leisure activities, Belga News Agency reports.

Opération Arc-en-Ciel (Operation Rainbow) is now in its 68th year and will see thousands of volunteers going from door to door to collect food items. On Friday, the collection began at participating schools.

“The aim is to collect as many non-perishable food items as possible to enable 15,000 under-privileged children and youths to enjoy holidays and leisure activities thanks to savings made on food budgets,” a statement from Opération Arc-en-Ciel explained. Associations will then "be able to use more resources for these moments of escape."

“All this is possible thanks to the help of our thousands of volunteers and the generous contributions from donors and participating media,” it added.

Last year, 106 tonnes of non-perishable food were collected and distributed to 199 associations.
