Asylum seekers – 449 asylum seekers sleep at WTC III

A total of 449 people spent Tuesday night in the reception facilities set up in the WTC III building in Brussels. The premises opened on September 7th and although initially intended as a temporary night shelter, they can now welcome 500 people 24/7, revealed Nancy Ferroni, Red Cross spokesperson, on Wednesday. The Red Cross is in charge of reception at the site. The press is invited to visit the facilities at 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday.

8 to 10 people share a single-sex room and there are smaller rooms for 4-5 people, reserved for families and women on their own. Families and vulnerable people who have an appointment at the Aliens Office are immediately brought to WTC III by Caritas after being informed in the waiting line.

Of the 25 working showers, 17 are inside the building and there are 8 others in a shipping container the army installed in a neighbouring street. There are wash basins set up and 20 toilets on the first floor, 15 on the second. A children’s play rea has also been organised.

The refugees are given a toiletry kit, disposable bedsheets and a blanket when they arrive. The centre is serving hot meals at lunchtime and in the evenings and a First Aid station is available. The centre also has wifi installed free of charge by a provider.
