Brussels to extend cycle brigades to all six police zones

Brussels will invest in the development of police cycle brigades throughout its region, the Secretary of State for Road Safety, Bianca Debaets (Christian Democratic and Flemish, CD&V) said on Friday. Of the region’s six police zones, two do not have cycle brigades. These are Marlow (Uccle, Watermael and Boitsfort) and Brussels Midi (Anderlecht, Saint-Gilles et Forest).

The objective is for every police zone to have a cycle brigade, Debaets said in the presence of Brussels Mayor Philippe Close and representatives of the cycle brigade of Brussels Capital-Ixelles, the Region’s largest cycle-borne squad with its 41 cyclists.

A call for projects has been issued to police zones desirous of installing cycle brigades and those wishing to increase theirs. A budget of 1.2 million euros has been set aside for this purpose for 2019.

“These brigades are a good way to enforce observance of the traffic code in favour of vulnerable users,” DeBaets said. “A visible police presence is also important.”
