Fewer than 200,000 unemployed job seekers in Wallonia

The number of unemployed job seekers in Wallonia fell to 197,323 at the end of April 2019, a 0.5% drop compared to April 2018, Forem, the Walloon employment office, said on Wednesday. At the end of April, Wallonia had 128,224 applicants for benefits (including 1,470 in the German-speaking Community) and 25,599 young people undergoing vocational training (including 114 in the German-speaking Community).

In addition to these, there are 30,571 people who had to be registered as job seekers and 12,983 who are registered by choice, for a total of 197,323 unemployed job seekers (DEI). The latter represent 12.5% of the Walloon working population.

Between the end of March and the end of April, the number of DEIs fell by 1.6%, or 3,188 people. Compared to April 2018, when the number of DEIs fell by 0.5%, corresponding to 956 people.

The most significant decrease over one year concerns DEIs aged 25 to less than 30 years (-5.5%) and those under 25 years (-3.2%), according to Forem.
