KUL, UCL, UGent and VUB make top 200 of QS World University Rankings

Seven Belgian universities made the annual “QS World University” rankings published on Tuesday, including 4 in the top 200 universities. KUL (Catholic University of Leuwen) is ranked 82nd, followed by UGent (University of Ghent, 124th), UCL (French-speaking Catholic University of Louvain, 149th), and VUB (Dutch-speaking Free University of Brussels, 194th).

ULB (Free University of Brussels) was ranked 173rd last year but fell out of the top 200 (207th). ULg (University of Liege) improved its ranking from 272nd to 265th. The University of Antwerp comes in at 205th.

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) stays at the top, followed by Harvard (2nd), then Cambridge and Stanford Universities (tied 3rd). Zurich Polytechnic joins the top 10 this year, as 2 Singapore universities make the greatest leap forward.

This 12th edition of the QS World University Rankings is based on several elements. When it comes to reputation, KUL comes 63rd and UCL 118th. ULB is well positioned amongst “international” universities at 101st, this criteria measuring how diverse a university is. Belgium is attractive to foreign students because of its “central location for European politics” and its “excellent quality of life,” points out the report.

The rankings also include a section based on citation rates, where KUL once again leads other Belgian institutions (46th), followed by ULg (139th).
