Driver accused of running cyclist over has prison stay extended

The drunk driver who ran a cyclist over in Temse on Monday night will have to spend an additional month in prison, the East-Flanders Public Prosecutor's Office have announced.

On Monday evening shortly after 22:00, the lifeless body of a 16 year-old cyclist was discovered on Doornstraat in Temse.

Shortly afterwards, police found a motorist on Beeldstraat in Sint-Niklaas who had crashed into a lamp post, after which the driver was arrested and taken into a police station.

He tested positive for alcohol and drugs and was immediately suspected of having run the cyclist over a few hours earlier in Temse.

On Friday, the driver was summoned to court in Dendermonde, where the judge informed him that he would be imprisoned for another month.
