Police will no longer use hypnosis

In Belgium, the Federal Police’s Behavioral Science Unit decided to put an end to judicial hypnosis, according to a communication by the Dernière Heure published on Saturday. The Federal Police has decided to use the cognitive interview method, which it considers to be more reliable.

The cognitive interview is a method through which the interviewee is asked to give details that might seem unnecessary. This procedure consists in mentally restoring the context of the event, remembering the scene from different temporal directions (for example, by changing the order of memorization).

Belgian justice had only authorized hypnosis with volunteer witnesses and victims. Never with suspects.
