Belgian athlete Wannes Wylin, co-founder of the sports association “Triple Challenge,” embarked on a world record attempt on Saturday morning, looking to achieve the greatest distance covered in 24 hours by wheelchair.
Graham Inchley, a Briton, currently holds the record with a distance of 161.61 kilometres, achieved exactly ten years ago to the day.
Wylin aims to mark the event held at Watersportbaan in Ghent over the weekend by surpassing this record along with two other related ones.
The Belgian’s goal is to cover 186 kilometres in 24 hours. In addition, he also wants to break the speed record for a wheelchair over 100 kilometers, which currently stands at 11 hours.
Finally, without taking a break, Wylin hopes to cover 210 kilometers, setting the record for the longest non-stop wheelchair distance.
Wylin’s triple world record attempt aims to bolster wider support for inclusivity in sports.
He believes that despite its massive potential and clear benefits to wellbeing, health, and social connection, Triple Challenge receives almost no structural support.
Wylin has been preparing for this ambitious attempt for three years, and has raised €1,000 to support his challenge. While not specifying an exact target, he expressed hopes for greater support in light of his efforts.
