EPF Congress 2021: Exploring Patient Advocacy in the Digital World

What role do patients play in digitalising our health and care systems?

From 26-29 October 2021, the European Patients’ Forum (EPF) will virtually convene experts, healthcare professionals, and patients to tackle this topic and more.

The COVID-19 pandemic has taught us how important digital solutions are for the healthcare world. Overall, new technologies can help improve patients access to care and have the potential for enhancing health literacy and connecting patients more dynamically with their healthcare providers and systems, with the aim to support better adherence to treatments. However, technological advancement also comes with a new set of challenges to address, and unprecedented ethical issues to consider.

Following the success of their first Congress held in 2019, EPF will hold a four day virtual event that will explore the digital transformation of healthcare and highlight the added value of patient partnerships. As Europe is now entering a new phase in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic, the EPF Congress 2021 will reflect on what this crisis has taught about the state of European health systems, and how digital technology can be utilised to improve healthcare and foster greater collaboration with patients and civil society.

With 300+ guests already registered, the EPF Congress Programme is brimming with interactive virtual sessions focusing on health data, digital health services, artificial intelligence, digital health literacy, cross-border healthcare and patient co-design. The objective is to put the spotlight on policy-making initiatives, connecting meaningful patient involvement to some of the headline priorities of the European Commission – the EU data strategy, the European Health Data Space and initiatives on Artificial Intelligence.

As the only patient-led Congress in Europe, the EPF Congress 2021 will include a wide audience of patient representatives, policy makers, health systems experts, healthcare profession representatives, academics, regulatory and HTA experts, health insurance providers and industry representatives, from Europe and beyond. This diversity will ensure a rich and dynamic discourse and exchange of ideas.

Some of the confirmed speakers for the Congress include: Signe Ratso, Deputy Director General of DG Research and Innovation, Jan-Philipp Beck, CEO of EIT Health, Cecilia Bonefeld-Dahl, Director-General of DIGITALEUROPE, Dr Hans Kluge, WHO Regional Director for Europe, Toni Andreu, Scientific Director of EATRIS, Dr Tessa Richards, Senior Editor of The BMJ, Angela Coulter, Independent Health Policy Analyst, Dipak Kalra, President of The European Institute for Innovation through Health Data, Petra Wilson, Managing Director at Health Connect Partners and many more.

The EPF Congress 2021 promises four inspiring days of learning, exploring, testing ideas and co-creating solutions.
