The first stone for the new wing of the Institute of Arts and Crafts was laid on Wednesday. This new wing will house the Center for Advanced Technology (CTA) in residential and industrial electricity. An appeal for proposals was launched in 2007 by the Wallonia-Brussels Federation and the Brussels Region. Construction is scheduled to end in January 2016. The new wing will cost approximately 8.4 million euros and is mainly being financed by the City of Brussels. A little less than a million was contributed by the Wallonia-Brussels Federation and the ERDF (European Regional Development Fund). The building covers an area of ??4,000 square meters.
"This building has a history," said Geoffroy Coomans of Brachène, Brussels alderman Urbanism. "It may be offset from an architectural point of view, but it is complementary to the recent needs of the Institute of Arts and Crafts, which has been substantially upgraded since the late 19th century”.
Faouzia Hariche, Deputy Mayor of Education, reiterated the City’s commitment in providing quality education through the provision of advanced equipment. Two other centers of advanced technology in computer graphics and electricity were opened in the Institute of Arts and Crafts in 2008 and 2012.
