Eddy Merckx and Jacky Ickx, key figures in Belgian 20th century sport, will both celebrate their seventieth birthday next year. An exhibition in their honour will be held at the Heysel Plateau from December 6th to June 21st and will include the first-ever showing of certain photographs and major pieces from both national and international collections.
The "Cannibal" and "Mr. Le Mans" have been friends since they were kids. Eddy Merckx, with his five Tours de France victories and won 31 monument race wins, is considered the greatest cyclist of all time. Jacky Ickx meanwhile, won two Formula One silvers and victoriously crossed the line ahead of the pack six times at the 24 heures du Mans.
Visitors to the exhibition will be able to view authentic bikes and race cars and personal memories provided by the two champions themselves. There will also be an installation by photographer Stephan Vanfleteren, plus an interactive section as part of the event.
The exhibition will open its doors on December 6th until June 21st at Brussels Trade Mard on the Heysel Plateau. It will be open every day except Wednesdays (excluding holiday periods) from 10 am to 6 pm but closed on Christmas Day and new Year's Day. Tickets will cost 15 euros at weekends and during holiday periods and 13 euros on weekdays.
