Belgian film critics name “Carol” Film of the year 2016

“Carol” by Todd Haynes was designated Film of the year by members of the Film Critic’s Union.

There were seven rounds before a winner was eventually chosen. In the end, “Carol” beat “Paterson” by Jim Jarmusch, which is still in cinemas.

The other nominees were “Hell or High Water” by David Mackenzie, “Frantz” by Francis Ozon and “Truman” by Cesc Gay.

“Carol” is based on the novel “The Price of Salt” by Patricia Highsmith, which was published under the pseudonym Claire Morgan in 1952. It describes the lesbian relationship between a young merchant and an aristocrat. The main actresses, Cate Blanchette and Rooney Mara, got an Oscar and the Palme for best actress respectively for their performances.
