Belgian co-production “Loveless” in line for a Bafta

The 71st British Academy Film Awards (Bafta) took place in London on Sunday. It recognisea the best films of 2017. The Belgo-Russian co-production “Loveless” by Russian director Andrej Zvyaginstev was nominated in the Best Foreign Language Film category.

“Loveless” was co-produced by Belgian company “Films du Fleuve”, run by the Dardenne brothers. It tells the story of two parents so wrapped up in their divorce and the preparation of their respective futures that they appear to lose almost all interest in their son: until he disappears.

The feature film received the 2018 Cinema Critics Union Award and the Jury Award at Cannes festival last year.

“Loveless” is up against “Elle” (Paul Verhoeven), “First they killed my father” (Angelina Jolie), “Mademoiselle” (Park Chan-wook), and “Le Client” (Asghar Farhadi).

The nominees for the Best Film category are “Call me by your Name” by Luca Guadagnino, “Darkest Hour” by Joe Wright, “Dunkirk” by Christopher Nolan, “The Shape of Water” by Guillermo del Toro and “3 Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri”, by Martin McDonagh.

“The Shape of Water” is up for no less than 12 Baftas and 13 Oscars. The American awards, the Oscars, will take place on the 4th of March, two weeks after the British awards. “Loveless” is a nominee in the Best Foreign Film at the Oscars.
