The Iris Festival invites Brussels residents and visitors to celebrate the 29th anniversary of the creation of Brussels Region on 5-6 May. This year’s festivities, which will pay homage to the late Belgian singer, Jacques Brel, will mark the first time European institutions will be participating in the event.

Selected communes, Watermael-Boitsfort, Uccle, Ixelles and Auderghem, will be highlighted at the festivities, which will include guided visits, information stands, interactive activities, debates, concerts and expos.

In their first participation in the event, the European institutions will invite visitors to discover the workings of the European Union through an open day to be held on Saturday. Particular attention will be devoted to the European Year of Cultural Heritage.

The traditional Electro Night at the Place des Palais (Palace Square) will later close off Day One. On Sunday, street art will be highlighted and various theme villages will be open to the public at the Brussels Park.

The weekend will end with a collaborative project celebrating the diversity of Brussels and paying homage to Jacques Brel, who passed away 40 years ago. About 15 artistes will sing the greatest hits of the famous singer from Schaerbeek at the Place des Palais.
