Seven Belgian beers win awards at the World Beer Cup in the US

Seven Belgian beers won awards at the World Beer Cup in the United States. The results of the biennial competition were announced in Nashville (Centre-East USA) on Thursday.

Two breweries were given gold medals. Omer Vander Ghinste (Bellegem) saw their LeFort triple win the gold in the Belgian style triple category. The Hoegaarden Grand Cru (AB InBev) got bronze in the same category. Boon (Lembeek) won a sixth consecutive gold medal, a record. This time it was for Gueuze Boon à l’Ancienne VAT 108, which won the Belgian style sour ale category. The silver went to another Pajottenland Lambic producer, Lindermans (Vlezenbeek), for its Oude Kriek Cuvée René.

In the Belgian style strong brown ale category, Omer Vander Ghinste got third place with their other LeFort. AB InBev also won multiple medals: the brewery giant left with two other bronze medals for its Belgian brands. They were Hoegaarden (Belgian style white ale) and Julius in the Belgian style pale strong ale category.

More than 8,200 beers and 2,515 breweries from 66 countries took part in this year’s World Beer Cup. There were more than 100 categories, a dozen of which were “Belgian style”. More than three quarters of the medals for the Belgian style categories were won by non-Belgian beers. All the beers are blind tasted by an international jury of 300 people, including 12 Belgians.
