Exhibition opens in memory of Jacques Brel

An art exhibition in memory of Jacques Brel was opened on Saturday. It is in the small commune of Zandvoorde in West Flanders, where his grand-father was mayor from 1833-1885. The 9th of October will be the 40th anniversary of the singer’s death. He was often known as “Grand Jacques”.

The singer’s father, Romain, lived in West Flanders before moving to the Belgian Congo in 1911. The Brel family didn’t move to Schaerbeek until he returned to Belgium in 1926.

The exhibition includes work by 18 visual artists and 5 poets whose pieces can be linked to Brel.

The pieces will be on display at 10 locations in the commune until the 14th of October.
