Magritte 2019 - “Our battles” by Guillaume Senez named Best Film

“Our battles” by Guillaume Senez was named Best Film at the 9th Magritte cinema awards in Brussels on Saturday. The feature film was the big winner, receiving five awards in total. 

“Our battles” was up against “Bitter flowers” by Olivier Meyers, “Laissez bronzer des cadavres” by Hélène Cattet and Bruno Forzani, “Mon ket” by François Damiens and “Tueurs” by François Trouckens and Jean- François Hensgen in the Best Film category. 

During the evening, the feature film also won awards in the Best Director, Best Supporting Actress (Lucie Debay), Best Female Newcomer (Lena Girard Voss) and Best Editor categories. 

“Our battles” is Guillaume Senez’s second feature film, after “Keeper” (2016). It tells the story of Oliver, who has to balance his children’s education, their family life and his professional life when his wife abruptly leaves the family home.  

The film was broadcast as a world premiere during the Film Critic’s week in Cannes in May. It was produced by Iota Production (Belgium), Savage Film (Flanders) and Les Films Pelleas (France). It got support from the Wallonia-Brussels Federation’s Audio-visual and Cinema Centre, the Flemish Audio-visual Fund (VAF), the RTBF, VOO and Be Tv. It also received a tax rebate from the government.
