Queen Mathilde marked Reading Week on Tuesday with a visit to Berchem Library in Antwerp Province, where she did a special reading for siblings of children with special needs.

This year’s edition of the Week, from 16 to 24 November, is devoted to reading rituals in families, schools, kindergartens and healthcare centres. It is organised by the Iedereen Leest, a non-profit organisation.

“Her Majesty has been providing support for years now and regularly gives readings,” said Iedereen Leest’s Tine Kuypers. “As a result of her experience in logopedics, she attaches great importance to our project.”

The children to whom Queen Mathilde read on Tuesday all have brothers or sisters with an illness, handicap or disorder. Brought together by the Brussenwerking association, they listened as the Queen read out aloud a story by Astrid Lindgren.

The Queen then met some of the parents and attended a working meeting, where she spoke with child psychiatrist Winnie Ang and Titus, a 14-year-old girl.
