The Brussels Public Prosecutor's Office has ordered the autopsy of a corpse removed from the Brussels canal in Anderlecht on Wednesday afternoon.

This news - shared by Belga News Agency - comes from the public prosecutor's spokesman Denis Goeman.

The body was first spotted in the water in Anderlecht on Wednesday afternoon around 2:00 PM and was taken out by the Brussels fire brigade. It turned out to be the remains of an adult man, but the exact cause of death is still unclear.

"The state of the body indicates that the victim did not end up in the water recently," Kathleen Calie of the Brussels-South police zone told HLN.

According to the Brussels public prosecutor's office, it has not yet been determined if the death was due to the intervention of a third party or not. The autopsy - planned for Thursday - should bring more clarity on the situation.
