A 500 kg bomb from World War II discovered in Lokeren

A 500 kg undetonated bomb was discovered Wednesday in Lokeren, say the local police. The bomb disposal unit SEDEE was on the scene and secured the area. The bomb was discovered while work was being done in the Nieuwestraat in Lokeren.  According to local police, the bomb was dropped from an airplane during World War II. "Currently, the bomb disposal unit is the service demining deeper excavations. A 250 meter area was blocked off as a precaution although no homes are located in the area. The five commercial businesses located in the area were notified of a possible evacuation", said police.

The Nieuwestraat was closed to all motor vehicles.
