Flemish doctors look to test breast cancer vaccine

At his request, Flemish doctors hope to collaborate in the research of American professor Brian Czerniecki, who  has developed a vaccine against breast cancer. If If certain conditions are met (funding of up to € 2 million as well as the approval of the Ethics Committee), thousands of Belgian teens will be asked to volunteer to be vaccinated, said Dr. Jaak Janssens, oncologist to the Jessa hospital in Hasselt. "We have been doing research on the vaccine for many years now. The next phase is to vaccinate girls on a large scale and follow them for 30 to 40 years. We have chosen girls aged of about 16 years old because we have learned that pregnancy has an impact on the development of breast cancer. Within this target group, we can simulate a pregnancy hormone and it will provide us with a lot of information, "stated Dr. Janssens in response to an article published in Het Belang van Limburg.

The doctor will detail the conditions of the study at an international conference that he, as President of The European Cancer Prevention Organisation (ECPO,) will be organizing on November 21st and 22nd in Hasselt. "Protocols to begin the search are ready. If the ethics committee gives its  approval and funding is available, we can then begin the selection of thousands of volunteers throughout Belgium.  Since one woman out of 10 could suffer from breast cancer during their lifetime, it is important that we test on a large scale, "he added.
