One of the accused in the Sharia4Belgium trial in Antwerp, a 26-year-old from Borgerhout, currently fighting in Syria, had access to the Doel nuclear power plant. The man worked for years as a technician until leaving for Syria in November 2012. He had access to the most secure areas of the nuclear plant, VTM revealed on Friday night. Ilyass Boughalab worked as a technician for three years for the Vincotte de Wilrijk Company, a company which provides certificates of compliance and conducts inspections to make sure that the plant meets industry standards. Ilyass Boughalab’s job was to check the welding. He therefore had access to the secure areas of the Doell plant as well as the nuclear reactor.
"In late 2012, he decided to leave the company," stated the Vincotte Company, very pleased with the work done by the defendant.
Ilyass Boughalab is one of 46 defendants in the Sharia4Belgium trial in Antwerp. The prosecutor has requested a 5-year prison sentence. Ilyass Boughalab is currently in Syria, fighting alongside a jihadist group inspired by al-Qaida.
