The bodies of two missing persons were found in the the Meuse River and the Albert Canal during the fourth "Libre Meuse," operation stated the Attorney General of Liege. The operation, which took place from June 3rd to September 24th, 2014, also led to the recovery of 216 submerged vehicles. The objective of this operation was to first search for three missing persons in the district of Liège but also recover vehicles that have beenthe subject of theft, embezzlement or other crimes, said the Liège general prosecutor.
The bodies were discovered and an autopsy has been requested. According to a preliminary investigation, there were no third parties involved in these deaths. The operation also led to the discovery of 216 vehicles, 172 of which have been linked to crimes.
Excavations were conducted three times a week (total of 24 days) on the Meuse between Huy and Vise, as well as the Albert Canal, between Liege and Kanne.
The operation was led by the Attorney General in consultation with the Liège prosecutor, and conducted in collaboration with the Missing Persons Unit of the Federal Police, the Liege and Zeebrugge traffic police , Disaster Victim Identification Service, the Federal Judicial Police, the local police, the Civil Protection, and the Wallonia Public Service (SPW).
