Over 300,000 tons of salt will be added to the 60,000 tons leftover from last winter’s stock for this year's winter which runs from October 15th to April 15th, 2015, said Maxime Prevot, Walloon Minister of Public Works, at the centre Perex de Daussoulx (Namur). "A mild winter requires 50,000 tons compared to the 100,000 tons of salt required for a harsh winter. We are ready to face the most critical conditions. Spreading salt on the roads is the best way to reduce the number of accidents "said Maxime Prevot.
Approximately 1,200 people and 660 snowplows and gritters are being mobilized for the 8,355 km of roads and Walloon regional highways. Data from the Météoroutes system data will be combined with that of the Royal Meteorological Institute (MRI) through 51 network weather stations.
A Memorandum of Understanding will allow an exchange of information with the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg and France.
Like last year, trucks of over 13 meters carrying merchandise will be prohibited on the ten most vulnerable routes for a limited time if necessary. Additional measures such as having equipment nearby for the speedy removal of trucks in difficulty will be taken in 28 at-risk areas and 32 coastlines.
Minister Prévot has not expressed support for mandatory "snow tires”: "The effect on road safety is undeniable, but it is an expense that not all families can afford."
