Belgian jihadist, former worker at Doel nuclear plant, dies in Syria

A further two Belgian jihadist fighters have died in Syria. One of them was Ilyass Boughalab, aged 26, who worked as a technician at Doel nuclear power plant for years before departing for Syria in November 2012, several Dutch newspapers revealed on Thursday. Ilyass Boughalab, from Borgerhout and defendant in the Shariah4Belgium trial, currently taking place in Antwerp, died in March but news of his death wasn't made public until Wednesday. In Syria, the fighter was known under the moniker of Abu Ubaydah al-Jarah al-Mahgribi or Beljiki. The second jihadist to die in Syria was known only by his moniker: Abu Yahya al-Beljiki. Ilyass Boughalab spent three years working as a technician for Vincotte Wilrijk, a company which provides certificates of compliance and also undertakes audits to check the plant meets current standards. In this role, he had access to Doel's secure area where the nuclear reactor is located. (Source: Belga)
