Rent in Belgium decreases by 12% in the past 5 years

Between January 1st, 2009 and June 30th, 2014, the market price of homes decreased by 12%. This figure comes from the Immoweb survey on rent prices over the past five years. Results were shared with Le Soir on Monday. The average rent for a house in Belgium today is 1,119 euros.

The trend for apartments is also down, with a decline of 1.19% between 2009 and this year. Apartment prices rose slightly in Brussels, Flanders and Wallonia, but the national average has decreasaed following a change in the structure of rental property portfolios. The average price of an apartment in the first six months of this year amounted to 766 euros.

Over the 2009-2014 period, rental prices have evolved far more slowly than the index of consumer prices (+9.8%).

More than a million Belgians are tenants, which represents about 30% of Belgian households.
