Lantin prison warden - compulsory resignation suspended

The Council of State has suspended the compulsory resignation decision made by the former Justice Minister Annemie Turtelboom in regard to a Lantin prison warden. The decision was originally made because the warden had a relationship with a former inmate, La Derniere Heure reported on Thursday. The Minister could not go from a simple reprimand to a dismissal for serious misconduct without giving a valid explanation, says the Council of State.

It is contrary to the status of prison officers to have any kind of relationship with inmates other than those related to their duties, and no relationship with released convicts, unless as part of a reintegration programme.

The 42-year-old female supervisor had no personal relationship with the prisoner during his stay at Lantin. It happened two months after his release from prison.

Last March, the former deputy director of the same Lantin prison, also suspected of having a relationship with an inmate, also saw her compulsory resignation sanction suspended by the Council of State.
