The government wants to end the obligatory sterilisation of transgender people

Transgender people who also want to change the sex on their passport must currently be sterilised definitively. Change in this area should come according to government opinion, De Morgen reported on Friday. Any person who wants to officially change sex must, at the moment, have hormone treatment and be irreversibly sterilised.

If this issue has not been one of the main political priorities over the last few weeks, parliament should soon lean towards an adaptation of the 2007 law, “in light of international obligations to human rights”.

“The aim is make permanent ethical progress”, says the deputy Carina Van Cauter (Open Vid). “It is a flagrant violation of physical integrity”.
