Thirteen instances of tachograph fraud reported by Federal Police

Thirteen lorry drivers were found guilty of tachograph fraud during a large Federal Road Police Operation that took place on Monday between 2 and 10 pm in Aalter on the E40; the police issued a statement on Tuesday. In total, some 55 HGVs were inspected. A digital tachograph is an electronic device in a vehicle which records the data pertaining to driving and rest periods, the vehicle speed and distance travelled.

Among the 13 drivers at fault, six had placed a magnet on the propeller in order to record a rest period while driving. Four had falsified their holiday records, two were driving with another driver's card, and another one had separated the tachograph from the propeller so that the electronic device couldn’t record any data.

The operation was carried out by 30 people, including 25 federal police tachograph fraud experts and two members of the Dutch police. "The Federal Road Police wants to send a strong message to fraudsters and give a positive reinforcement for firms and drivers who try to respect the law".

In addition to the thirteen instances of tachograph fraud, fourteen other offences were reported. Fines issued amounted to 51,671 euros.
