More than 7,000 children abused in the Walloon-Brussels Federation in 2013

In 2013, 42,269 young people in difficulty or in danger were taken in by the Walloon-Brussels Federation Youth Assisstance services (Aide à la jeunesse (AIJ). This comes from a report requested by the relevant minister, Rachid Madrane (PS, Socialist Party), that La Dernière Heure referenced on Wednesday. Out of the 42,269 children taken in, more than 7,343 children had been abused. That’s 778 more than in 2012,, an increase of 12%. In 63% of cases, they are victims of neglect.

Physical abuse (or strong suspicion) affects a third of the children taken in, 2,020 in 2013. For psychological abuse, it’s 16% of reported cases, 1,159 children. There were 886 victims of sexual abuse taken in by the AIJ in 2013. More than two cases a day.
