Eleven Flemish celebrities formally notify the government for not doing enough about climate change

Convinced that Belgium will not be able reduce its C02 emissions by 40 pc voluntarily, eleven well-known Flemish celebrities have decided to formally notify the different federal and regional Belgian governments. This is similar to initiatives already undertaken in the Netherlands and United States. They announced the initiative in Ghent on Monday evening. Among the eleven celebrities are the director Nic Balthazar, the presenter Francesca Vanthielen, AB director Dirk de Clippeleir and the artist Koen Van Mechelen.  They have given authorities one month to prove they want to implement measures to reduce CO2 emissions by 40 pc between 1990 and 2020.

“We don’t expect a rapid turnaround. That’s why we have prepared a formal statement for January, in front of the courts, for the four governments concerned”, explains Serge Gheldere, one of the initiatives promoters.

The eleven celebrities are acting on their own behalf, but suggest that people interested should join the initiative. However, they say it should be taken very seriously “as it is not a petition”.
