Charleroi: the armed man in the Courthouse set free

The armed man who caused the evacuation of the Courthouse at lunchtime on Monday was released on Tuesday. The investigating judge has nevertheless ordered that he receive a mental health assessment. The Charleroi Courthouse was evacuated on Monday after an armed man was reported in its corridors. Numerous law enforcement officers went to the scene and searched the building, without finding the suspect. He had however been spotted on surveillance cameras.

The local police eventually managed to identify him and find him in the crowd. The suspect had an air pistol in his possession, and was already known to police for carrying guns. He said he was carrying the gun as he had received threats. When police officers arrived, he got scared and hid inside the Courthouse.

After being taken into custody, he went before the Charleroi Prosecutor on Tuesday, who handed the case over to the investigating judge and requested an arrest warrant. The investigating judge released him, but ordered he receive a mental health assessment.
