Electrabel is keeping a close eye on the airspace above its power plants, according to Tuesday’s edition of L’Echo. AFCN (Federal Agency for Nuclear Control) and OCAM (Threat Assessment Coordination Body) wrote to Electrabel asking them to be particularly vigilant in this matter. This warning followed drone flights above French nuclear power stations. Approximately 20 nocturnal flights have been identified since October.
According to Bruno Comby, former EDF employee and president of Environmentalists for Nuclear Energy, the likeliest explanation is that the small pilotless planes are trying to locate transformers using thermal cameras, as they are the power plants’ weak link.
Electrabel have confirmed they have a system in place to identify drones but reveal they have yet to detect one.
