An individual attacked a one and a half year old child with a screwdriver in the Delhaize supermarket in Deurne, several Flemish newspapers reported on Tuesday.
The little girl was with her mother. When she turned her back, she realized a man was leaning towards her child. “The mother reacted straight away”, said Fons Bastiaenssens, Antwerp police spokesman. “The man then dropped the screwdriver, turned and fled”.
The child’s face was injured near the eye, and she was taken to Deurne hospital where she was operated on. The culprit had not yet been found on Monday evening.
