Child attacked with screwdriver in Delhaize supermarket in Deurne:  suspect under arrest

The Antwerp prosecutor have announced that the suspect arrested after attacking a one-and-a-half-year-old child with a screwdriver in a Deurne supermarket (Antwerp province) was placed under arrest for assault and battery with intent to kill, this Wednesday. The suspect, who lived near the supermarket where the attack took place, was released on parole in 2008 after being detained for committing acts of aggression. The public prosecutor’s office has requested a psychiatric assessment of his mental faculties.

Last Tuesday, the victim was in a critical condition. No update has been given on her current state of health or on the progress of her recovery. A medical examiner has been appointed to observe and assess the extent of the child's injuries.
