One footballer in four in Belgium has financial problems

One footballer in four playing in the Jupiler Pro League has financial problems, despite an average net salary of 8,670 euros, without including bonuses. This is according to a report by Antwerp University involving 102 professional football players that De Morgen referred to on Saturday. This situation is explained by bad money management, overspending and gambling. The footballers questioned spend almost 90% of their salary on clothes, shoes or food. A quarter of them admit to being short of money.

According to the researchers, two reasons explain this situation: bad money management and gambling.

Only one footballer in four confides the management of their money to an accountant. For the others, it’s often family members who look after their finances.
