Sjuzana, Saint-Josse pupil detained at Bruges detention centre, released

The Immigration Department has decided not to appeal the Monday decision of Brussels' Court of First Instance to grant the request for her release. On Monday at around noon, the young adult, a pupil in Saint-Josse-ten-Node, announced she had been released from the Bruges detention centre. She will be giving a press conference at Cudell Guy high school in Liedekerke at 5:00pm. On December 10th, 19-year-old Sjuzana was with a friend who had stolen from a shop on Rue Neuve in Brussels. Her papers were checked after the incident and she was arrested and held at the Bruges detention centre because she was found not to have a residency permit for Belgium.

A petition was launched by her family, her friends and teachers at Cudell Guy high school, The League of Human Rights, the commune of Saint-Josse, the Kids Parliament and RESF Belgium (Education Without Borders Network), calling for demonstrations to demand she be released and granted a residency permit.

Sjuzana was 3 years old when she arrived in Belgium and she completed her entire schooling in Brussels.  She is currently in her 7ème year, studying for a vocational diploma in office administration at Cudell Guy high school in Saint-Josse-ten-Noode. She does not want to go back to her country of origin, Armenia, as she has no family there and she does not speak the language.
