The number of traffic jams on Belgian roads went down in 2014, compared to 2013. However, structural traffic jams, which were not caused by bad weather or accidents, went up, Touring Mobilis said on Thursday. Contrary to 2013, there were no traffic jams caused by snow in 2014. The length of traffic jams never exceeded 400km, which happened 11 times in 2013. Strikes against austerity measures by the government were among the main causes of traffic jams last year, according to Touring Mobilis.
Touring Mobilis recorded traffic jams of over 300km lasting over 18 hours in 2014, compared to around 36 to 49 hours in 2013 and 2010. The longest traffic jam, 380km, was recorded on Tuesday the 29th of April. It was a day of heavy rain and numerous accidents on the road.
The number of small traffic jams went up last year. Touring Mobilis recorded a traffic jam 100 to 150km long that lasted 1,010 hours, 42 full days. In 2013, one lasted 937,1 hours. “We have therefore seen an increase in structural traffic jams”, Touring adds.
