Steenokkerzeel resident registers “Je suis Charlie” trademark in Benelux

Yanick Uytterhaegen, a resident of Steenokkerzeel, in Flemish Brabant, has registered the “Je suis Charlie” trademark for Benelux, confirmed BOIP (Benelux Office for Intellectual Property) on Tuesday. The BOIP website points out that Mr. Uytterhaegen filed the name “Je suis Charlie” on January 8th at 8:34am, the day after the terrorist attack perpetrated against the satirical weekly in Paris. The Hague-based BOIP confirmed the application to the Belga press agency. After a formal examination, the application was publicised on their website on Monday. “But the procedure is on-going,” explained the Office, pointing out that it may last for up to one or 2 months.

The deadline for contesting the trademark filing is March 12th, 2015. According to SPF Economie (Belgian Ministry of Economy), in order to do so, the person must “prove that he or she has already registered (or is in the process of registering) an identical or similar trademark for identical or similar products or services.” There are also certain conditions in which proprietors of well-known trademarks can also oppose the process.

The Belgian has filed to become the proprietor of the “Je suis Charlie” trademark for products as diverse as photographs, paper, cardboard boxes, clothes, sports gear, drinks or phones and tablets.

He was unavailable for comment early on Tuesday afternoon.
